As a result of the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela, the number of victims has reached 1,430, and 3,238 people have been injured, announced the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez.
"As of this hour, we have already counted 1,430 of our brothers and sisters who, unfortunately, have died. Our hugs and condolences to their families and loved ones,” Rodriguez said during a regular nationally televised briefing.
According to the politician, 3238 wounded received medical assistance. The authorities also registered 3,142 families who remained homeless, organized shelters for them and provided necessary assistance.
Rodríguez said that medical personnel have conducted more than 12,000 mobile consultations in disaster areas, and more than 5,000 people have received help at primary health screening centers.
New foreign medical and rescue teams joined the international response, bringing the total number of foreign rescuers to 2,242.
Two powerful earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck off the northern coast of Venezuela in less than a minute on Wednesday. The worst damage was reported in the state of La Guaira and Caracas. The authorities have declared a state of emergency, search and rescue operations are ongoing.
