An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 occurred in Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan on Saturday, causing panic among residents, who urgently left their homes, the Associated Press reported.
The authorities said that there are no reports of damage or casualties at this time.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the epicenter of the earthquake was located in Afghanistan, in the region of the Hindu Kush mountain range.
The earthquake was felt in Islamabad, as well as in eastern Punjab province and northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan. Tremors were also registered in the Pakistani part of Kashmir.
In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, emergency services have been put on high alert. Anwar Shahzad, the representative of the State Department of Emergency Situations, said that according to the preliminary assessment, neither victims nor destruction were found.
Pakistan is located in a seismically active zone and regularly faces earthquakes. One of the most devastating was the 2005 magnitude 7.6 earthquake that killed tens of thousands of people in Pakistan and Kashmir.
