The UN's International Maritime Organization (IMO) has suspended its plan to evacuate sailors from the Strait of Hormuz after an attack on a cargo ship off the coast of Oman. Arsenio Dominguez, the general secretary of the organization, announced this in a statement.
"Following the launch of the UN evacuation program, which has already successfully evacuated several ships, I have decided to temporarily suspend its implementation to reaffirm that the necessary security guarantees will continue to be maintained for the ships on our evacuation list and for all ships in the region," Dominguez said. He noted that he was informed about the attack on the ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf of Oman. "This ship did not follow the UN evacuation procedure.
I have always maintained that the safety of seafarers is paramount. Therefore, in order to ensure a coordinated approach and the safety of navigation, the evacuation plan will be suspended until the situation is clarified," Dominguez stated.
