The European Commissioner for EU enlargement has expressed confidence that the enlargement of the European Union will take place during his mandate, but the exact number of new member states has not yet been determined.
He announced this during the discussion held at the conference on the restoration of Ukraine in Gdańsk, reports "Европейская правда".
According to Kos, he can talk with confidence about the membership of Montenegro during his activities on enlargement issues, which will end in 2029.
"I can say that Montenegro will become the next member during my mandate. And if Iceland returns to the question of membership, and the citizens support it in the referendum in August, I will also be happy about it," he stated.
The European Commissioner also noted the significant progress of Albania, stressing that the country is already starting to close the negotiation chapters.
"Thus, now the expansion process is moving forward faster than in the last 15 years," Kos said.
At the same time, he emphasized that the acceleration of negotiations is connected with the ongoing full-scale war in Ukraine.
"We have to admit that the war in Ukraine has become the reason for the acceleration of this process," said the European Commissioner.
