On June 25, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Ambassador of Romania to Russia K. Istrate, who was handed the Ministry's note declaring the Romanian Consul General in St. Petersburg an "undesirable person" and the upcoming closure of that country's consular institution there. The decision was stated in the message of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
"This measure is a response to Bucharest's unjustified cancellation of the work agreement of the Russian Consulate General in Constanta and the declaration of its head as an "undesirable person," the message states.
The Russian Consulate General in Constanta was closed by the Romanian authorities at the end of May after the drone incident. On May 29, the drone collided with one of the multi-storey residential buildings of the city of Galats, near the Ukrainian border. Four people were injured in the accident. Romanian President Nikushor Dan announced that the drone was shot down by Ukrainian anti-aircraft defenses. At the same time, Bucharest blamed Russia for the incident.
