A hotline between the US and Iran is needed to restore shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani told the Financial Times (FT).
He noted that such a communication channel, which was agreed upon by the parties during negotiations in Switzerland, is necessary to counter misinformation and ensure coordination during demining operations in the important waterway.
"Sometimes we face such situations, an attempt is made to sow confusion," said the head of the government of Qatar, which, together with Pakistan, acts as a mediator between Tehran and Washington. "Therefore, the purpose of the hotline is to ensure that any vessel under threat is inspected by Iran and allowed safe passage," the source told the newspaper.
