Retro legend: Opel GT car is in the spotlight again (photos)

The Opel GT is often called the "little Corvette". its appearance is so reminiscent of the legendary American sports car that at first glance one might think that it is just a small-sized Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. This 1973 model recently appeared in an online auction on the Bring a Trailer platform. The car is distinguished by its bright golden color, reminiscent of citrus tones, as well as a four-speed manual transmission, which allows the driver to fully control the power of the engine.

How the Opel GT was born?

In the 1960s, Opel, owned by General Motors, had a fairly conservative model line. The company needed a sportier and more attractive car to refresh its image. A solution was found: to create a compact but beautiful sports car based on the Opel Kadett model. The famous car designer Clare MacKichan, who also created the Chevrolet Nomad and the C2 generation Chevrolet Corvette, worked on the design. The Opel GT was first presented as a concept in 1965, but serial production did not begin until 1968.

In the US, the Opel GT was sold through Buick dealers. Although an automatic transmission was also offered, the car's 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine produced about 89 horsepower, so drivers preferred the manual version for more spirited driving. The Opel GT may not be the most suitable car for a large trunk or long trips, but its small size, lightness and flexibility make it a lot of fun to drive on winding roads.
