Referendum on receiving citizenship in Italy has failed due to low participation

Italy has failed the referendum to reduce citizenship for 10 to 5 years. The reason is the low participation of citizens. The statement came about Al Jazeera and the BBC.

After the referendum on citizenship and the labor market in Italy, five socio-economic issues were put to a vote. The most controversial proposal was to reduce the expiration date for 5 years for citizenship. Prime Minister George Meloni called on the citizens not to take part in the voting.

According to official data, the number of voters in two days did not exceed 30%. In order to give legal force, no less than 50% participation in the decision. Opposition parties have made changes in the legislation in Italy, some non-governmental organizations and the country's largest trade union, the universal work of employment.

WTO Secretary General Mauricitsi Landin, criticizing the low participation, described it as a sign of the "obvious democratic crisis" in Italy. And Prime Minister Meloni's "Italian Brothers" party has stated on social networks that the "only real goal" of the referendum is the failure of the Prime Minister's government.
