The Armenian community of Abkhazia has appealed to the government of Armenia with a request to officially appeal to the authorities of the unrecognized republic, demanding that additional measures be taken to protect the Armenian population.

The media outlet writes that according to Abkhazian Armenians, who make up about 17% of the unrecognized republic’s population, the local political opposition has close ties with radical Turkish nationalists and Turkish intelligence services.
As a result, in the face of growing pressure, the opposition views local Armenians as an obstacle to a Turkish-backed seizure of power and is preparing provocations against them.
“There are good reasons for such fears. Declassified documents have appeared on the Insider Abkhazia telegram channel, revealing the plan of Devlet Bahceli, the leader of Turkey’s ultra-nationalist Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and a key ally of Erdogan, against the Armenians of Abkhazia.
His official letter to Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan sets out a clear strategy, which includes the following steps: identification of Armenians in Abkhazia, involving specialists to create a database of Armenians living in the region, transfer of data to Azerbaijan, involvement of pro-Turkish politicians and cooperation with Abkhaz leaders to weaken Armenian influence, collection of state support using the resources of the Turkish state for the implementation of this program,” ArmInfo writes.
