Lavrov reminded Yerevan of Ukraine's experience of seeking association with the EU. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced this at a press conference dedicated to the results of Russian diplomacy in 2024.
"In 2013, the then President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, drew attention to the fact that the negotiations on Ukraine's association with the EU were reaching such a point that they would contradict the obligations under the CIS FTA, where there were no internal customs duties.
"Ukraine wanted to get the same zero customs duties with the EU. And when Yanukovych's government realized that we were going to put a direct barrier on the way of Ukrainian imports to Russia, it asked to postpone the signing of the agreement," he said.
According to Lavrov, the decision of the Armenian leadership to start the process of joining any international organization is a sovereign decision.
"But weighing all the positive and negative sides is also the responsibility of the Armenian government," he added.
