The EU proposes to extend the deployment period of the European Union observation mission in Armenia

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs proposed to extend the deployment of the European Union civilian mission in Armenia for another two years."To Freedom"the press office of the High Representative reported.

"The member states have welcomed the proposal and are currently discussing the necessary legal acts with the relevant bodies of the Council of the European Union.

The Council's decision on the extension is expected in the coming days," said the written response provided to Azatan. Baku has been accusing the mission of espionage and destabilizing the region for months.

In response to these accusations, the office of the High Representative said: "The mandate of the European Union mission in Armenia is very clear: to observe and report on the ground on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border the situation on the ground of Armenia and to contribute to the efforts of the European Union regarding the Armenian-Azerbaijan settlement.

Since the deployment of the monitoring mission, the number of armed incidents in the border areas has decreased significantly. As is known, the EU regularly informs Azerbaijan about the activities of the mission."

In February 2023, first 100 civilian observers arrived in Armenia, and months later their number doubled.

Baku demands to stop the activities of the EU mission on the border. Nikol Pashinyan confirmed in an interview with the Public TV Company on November 22 that this point is indeed being discussed with Baku, and that the Armenian side offered Azerbaijan to remove the EU observers from the demarcated areas.
