South Korean police are investigating the president

The South Korean police have started an investigation against the country's president, Yun Seok-yeol, in connection with the introduction of martial law in the country with a group of deputies accused of rebellion, the director of the National Intelligence Agency of the Republic of Korea announced.

"We will carefully conduct the investigation in accordance with the law and procedure," the Chosun Ilbo newspaper quoted the police officer as saying.

Woo Jong-soo said the situation was "unprecedented" and that the case had been assigned to his department's security department.

Earlier, opposition lawmakers submitted an official statement to the National Investigation Agency accusing President Yoon Seok-yeol, former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, Army Chief of Staff Park Ahn-soo, who was appointed to oversee martial law, and Interior Minister Lee Sang.
