On March 30, at the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council, the resolution "Prevention of Genocide" presented by the Republic of Armenia was unanimously adopted.
The biennial resolution is based on the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and plays an essential role in moving the provisions of that important document into the operational field of UN policy.
The resolution aims to promote the ideology of early warning in the prevention of genocide, define the range of risk factors, including hatred, discrimination and impunity. The resolution also emphasizes the importance of timely response, which can significantly contribute to preventing the escalation of violence.
The resolution, bringing the issue of genocide prevention to the international agenda, once again emphasizes the importance of the topic among the current diplomatic priorities. It contributes to the strengthening of international justice mechanisms and includes those international developments and challenges that need the most attention in the given period.
The resolution presented this year proposes to strengthen the mandate of genocide prevention in the context of the UN80 reform process and draws attention to the fact that algorithmic systems and artificial intelligence tools can contribute to the spread of misinformation and hatred, affecting information flows and undermining human rights.
The "Prevention of Genocide" resolution also makes an important contribution to promoting the process of universal ratification of the Convention against Genocide by encouraging states that have not yet acceded to the Convention to accede to it immediately.
As in previous years, this year too, the "Prevention of Genocide" resolution presented by Armenia enjoys the broad support of UN member states representing all regional groups, as evidenced by the large number of co-authors, which already reaches six dozen at the time of adoption.
The resolution once again reaffirms Armenia's call to the international community and the whole world to unite to prevent the scourge of genocide.
