FT. The Netherlands wants to deport illegal immigrants to Uganda

The Netherlands plans to send migrants who failed to get asylum to Uganda. The pilot project to create a transit hub in the country can start as early as 2026, the Minister of Migration and Asylum of the Netherlands, Minister of Foreign Affairs David van Wiel stated in an interview with the British newspaper The Financial Times (FT).

"We currently have a clear asylum system, but too many people are staying here when they should have returned home. We have to make sure that people who don't really have a right to be here in Europe actually leave," he said.

As van Wiel explained, this measure also serves as a "preventive" signal; if one is denied asylum, they better leave voluntarily or they will be deported to Uganda. The minister believes that migrants outside Europe are becoming "more adaptable" and more willing to return to their home countries.
